Why registers matter more than you think

Taking attendance feels like a school formality. It's closer to insurance.

The quick answer

  • It answers "who was there?" when something goes wrong and memory isn't enough.
  • It shows a child drifting while there's still time to do something.
  • On Befundo it's one card on the meeting page: Present, Late or Absent, then Save.
  • Families see their own child's marks, and nobody else's.

What it answers

Who was in the room. If something happens, such as an injury, a complaint or a dispute about a fee, the first question is always who was there. Memory isn't an answer.

Whether a child is drifting. Three absences in a term is a pattern. A pattern spotted in week five can be fixed; noticed at the end of the term, it's just a child who left.

Whether your class is working. Attendance is the cheapest satisfaction survey you'll ever run. It tells you the truth even when nobody wants to say it to your face.

Take it in two minutes

If it takes longer, it won't survive a busy term. On Befundo it's a list of names and one tap each:

  1. Open the meeting from the class's Meetings, on the website. A past meeting still waiting shows Attendance due.
  2. On the Attendance card, mark each student Present, Late or Absent. Late counts as attended.
  3. Press Save attendance.

When you end a live session, Befundo asks you to take attendance straight away.

What families see

Each family sees their own child's marks on the meeting page, and the whole history on the child's report. They never see anybody else's.

Say something when it slips

After a few missed sessions, send the family a short, plain note: we've missed them, is everything all right? Occasionally it surfaces a problem you can solve. More often it simply tells a family that somebody noticed, which is a large part of what they're paying for.

The providers who do this keep more of their families, and none of them would describe it as a retention strategy.
